When the forecast changes its mind
And decides that it is tired of balmy evenings
And why don’t we have some freezing temperatures this weekend?
To the field we go!
To cut whole plants that are almost mature
To drop them on tarps and roll them up
For easy transportation to the greenhouse where they won’t freeze
This is the time where we poke at flowers
Trying to decide if these green seeds will make it indoors
Or if it is a lost cause to bring them in
And we should just leave them and maybe it won’t hit zero
And we’ll get another week or two for the plants to mature
We won’t know until Monday what we should have done
And by then we’ll have already decided
And it will be time for relief or regret
