FSA Tip #27 Crop Profit Calculator

Here’s a Profit Calculator I put together to get ready for week 3 of the Season Review Challenge.

You can evaluate each of your crops against your profit benchmarks to see what crops you should grow more of on your farm, and what crops you should drop.

Step 1: How much do you want to sell during the year?

This is the combined gross sales for your farmers markets, CSA, wholesale clients – any and all of the ways you sell your crops.

Step 2: How much growing space do you have?

Step 3: What your crops need to average in $/acre to hit your sales goals

Step 4: Your crop profit benchmarks in $ per bedft.

Step 5: The Profit Calculator

There are a few column to enter

  • Your crops
  • The growing space for each crop
  • How much you harvested
  • The price for each crop

And then through the magic of spreadsheets, the calculator will tell you how this crop fares against your profit benchmarks.

In this tip, we’ll see …

  • The elements that determine your Crop Profit Benchmarks
  • How to measure the width of your beds
  • What exactly is a BEDFT
  • A fantastic calculator that uses SUMIF, INDEX MATCH and Condition Formatting to determine your crop profitability.

You can get the spreadsheet from this tip to follow along at home.

Which of your crops does the profit calculator like?

And which crops make it upset?
