The Corn You Planted In May

Remember those sweet corn plants you planted in May?

How the leaves stretched out in June
So fast, you could almost see them growing

And they were so majestic in July

Then, August, worrying about the raccoons
and everyone else who loves sweet corn

And how you cheered on those plants
to help them get over the finish line & ripen their seed
before the September killing frosts
on the 7 day forecast could catch up

Those sweet corn plants are resting now

On their way to organic matter
as they dream of cover crops
and a coming fallow year
before the seed garden is back in production.
