Trellising onions for seed

The first flower buds are starting to appear on these seed onions.

That means these ???? ???? ???? are about to stretch out real soon with long stems and a flower on the end of each stem.

We normally trellis seed crops with stakes and twine. But this year we’re trying some Hortonova trellis netting on the seed onions. We hope it will be a bit easier to manage all the stems and maybe be a bit quicker to set up.

On the left of the onions, there’s some Red Russian kale in flower.

On the right is cilantro. This cilantro is about 2 weeks away from being the right size for beautiful bunches. And conveniently enough, our first CSA baskets start in 2 weeks!

What amazing cilantro timing – it’s almost like it was planned that way.

My next free online workshop is on Thursday May 19 at 2pm Eastern …
