The seed growers podcast episode 6 – Helen Skiba of Artemis Flower Farm

Helen Skiba is a flower farmer outside of Boulder, Colorado who sells her fresh flowers through farmers markets, weddings,  wholesale and a flower CSA. Helen also sells dahlia tubers and dutch flower bulbs through her website.

In this episode Helen talks about how she integrates saving seed into a cut flower farm for on farm use.

About how she decides what flower varieties to save seed from based on her needs to maintain specific colours for her floral designs and whether the seed is open pollinated.

About how Helen tags individual seed plants while harvesting flowers so she can come back and harvest seeds later in the season.

For this episode’s technical section, Helen talks about 2 crops:

First – Bupleurum seeds saved from cut flower plantings that germinate better than any seed she buys.

And second – everything about Dahlia tubers from planting though to harvest and division and storage. And managing Dahlia’s sales and harvest goals with spreadsheets.
